If you are just like me who doesn't have any time (or money :'( ) to attend any Photography Course, fret not, IIN is there!!!! Jokes aside, today Internet is such a medium that one can learn anything and everything, if the desire is there and Photography is no exception. In fact, there are so many high quality materials and tutorial videos freely available for teaching Photography, one hardly has to spend any money (apart from the internet bills that is) to learn the art.
There are many quality websites that give some very good tips and tutorials but in this post, I shall concentrate only on the YouTube channels. There are many good channels available that offer quality content and advise on Photography. In fact there are some illustrated photographers who have managed to build their entire career out of the publicity they have received by making YouTube videos. Their channels have millions of viewers (literally) and upload videos almost everyday. Not all the videos may be useful to us, but it doesn't hurt to watch and in the process, we may get something in return as well. So lets go and take a look at the following channels-
1. Adorama TV
Adorama is a Photography Shop of international repute situated at New York. They also have a thriving e-commerce website for sale and rental of Photography equipment. But what is more relevant to us is the fact that they have a YouTube channel which is a treasure trove of information for everything related to photography, be it shooting techniques, lighting techniques, composition or post processing. It is a must watch for any beginner trying to grasp concepts of photography.
2. B&H
B&H is also an internationally renowned Photo and Video equipment store situated at New York and they also have a very good channel comprising of some excellent tutorials. Search for Jerry Ghionis workshop videos in the channel. They are long, averaging more than 2 hours, but they are every bit worth the watch. I have learned everything I know about posing and lighting techniques by watching his videos. Do not miss them.
3. Phlearn
If you have read my last post, you may have noticed that I have mentioned a certain Aaron Nace. He is the owner of Phlearn.com, a Photoshop and Lightroom tutorial website. There are many similar instructors at YouTube who mainly use the YouTube channel to advertise their websites and paid courses, but this guy is different. He regularly publishes new videos about various techniques in Photoshop and Lightroom, some of which are highly advanced stuff. In fact, this guy shares so much for free, it sometimes intrigues me how he sustains his main business. I have learned everything I know about Post Processing from YouTube and Aron Nace is undoubtedly the biggest contributor.
4. Serge Ramelli
Like PHlearn, this channel is also dedicated towards teaching Photoshop and Lightroom techniques and tutorials. Serge Ramelli is a French photographer and sometimes his accent can get a little difficult to understand for us Indians, but the way he explains everything with extreme detail, even a novice who's just starting out in Photoshop or Lightroom can easily follow him. Highly recommended for starters.
5. DigitalRev TV
Now I was a bit hesitant in including this one. Yes, this is the worlds most viewed and subscribed Photography channel, but mainly this is a Photography equipment reviewing channel (which goes on to show that people are more concerned about Photography gear than the actual art of doing photography). However I still decided to include this because of Kai, the presenter. He is damn funny. Plus occasionally they do some videos regarding Photography techniques which are good. All in all, you can't learn about techniques and basics like the other channels, but you will learn quite a lot about the different types of gear, plus there will a lot of chuckles. Do you want more reasons? (Psst, Rita Law, the occasional co-presenter is cute, so that's another reason)
Ok, so that's the list. However there are simply too many good YouTube channels on Photography and selecting only five out of them was a tough job. So, in order to do justice to some other very good channels, lets take a look at the honorable mentions-
Matt Granger- Previously known as "That Nikon Guy", this channel is hosted by Matt Granger, a photographer from Sydny, Australia. Topics range from gear reviews, shooting techniques, Vlogs, interviews etc.
Mike Brown- Hosted by Mike Brown, a photographer and photography instructor, this channel also hosts a large number of videos. There are some very good videos offering tips and techniques.
TheCameraStoreTV- Extremely similar to DigitalRev TV. Mainly offers gear reviews.
Karl Taylor- This guy also offers some good videos offering tips on lighting techniques and indoor shoots.
Advancing Your Photography- A mixed bag of sorts, I mainly check this channel for the interviews with famous photographers.
So, thats actually 10 channels there while I promised only five. Great for you, you got 5 free!! However even 10 is not enough as there are many good channels that probably I am not aware of or simply overlooked. Do you know any such channel that a Photographer should subscribe to? Please let me know by commenting below. So goodbye till next time. See ya.
